Employment in Canada was little changed in November following an increase of 108,000 in October, Statistics Canada reported today. Total employment was 19.7 million.
Full-time employment increased by 51,000 in November. According to the report, since November 2021, when full-time employment first surpassed its pre-Covid-19 pandemic level, full-time work has grown by 460,000 jobs.
On the other hand, part-time employment was little changed for the sixth consecutive month in November and down by 91,000 on a year-over-year basis, or 2.5%. In addition, the number of employees in both the public and private sectors was little changed in November from October. On a year-over-year basis, the number of employees has grown at a similar pace in the public sector at 2.2% and in the private sector at 2.0%.
Among the self-employed, employment was also little changed in November from October. Self-employment had been on a slight upward trend from October 2021 to May 2022 but has shown little net growth in recent months.
Canada’s unemployment rate declined to 5.1% in November, down 0.1 percentage point from October.
In the provinces, Quebec led the employment increase with a gain of 28,000 in November, its third increase in four months, with its unemployment rate reaching a new record low of 3.8%.
Employment declined in Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, Manitoba, Alberta, and British Columbia.
