The opportunity for training and development is high on the list of the things today’s employees value and companies are taking notice. In fact, given the impact of technology and other external impacts, companies can’t afford not to prioritize training and development.
Most are not. In fact, they’re investing significant time, money, and effort in ensuring that employees have the knowledge, skills, and ability to do the jobs they currently hold—and those they may hold in the future.
American Airlines is one notable examples.
Significant Investments in Training
American Airlines invested $1.1 billion in training and development programs in 2023. Investments went toward new hire orientation, a women’s leadership program and the development of a learning hub.
A commitment to new hire orientation ensures a strong start for employees. At American Airlines new hires must complete this training within their first 30 days on the job. In 2023 about 14,000 team members participated representing 38,000 hours of time across self-paced modules and live welcome sessions.
The women’s leadership program is designed to increase numbers of both women leaders and pilots. The program also provides valuable mentoring opportunities. In 2023, more than 300 participants attended 10 different women’s leadership and development events.
American Airlines’ learning hub serves as the central platform for all mandatory, safety, and regulatory compliance training. In 2023, it processed over 9 million course registrations, with an average of 119,372 unique users.
Training and Development Hours by Division
Employees in the Airports and Cargo division received 1.95 million hours of role-specific training in 2023 with a focus on ensuring that they’re well prepared to handle the operational demands of airport and cargo services.
Pilots also received extensive training in the Flight Operations division including flight simulator sessions, reflecting the airline’s commitment to maintaining high safety and performance standards.
By investing in these comprehensive training programs, American Airlines demonstrates its commitment to employee development, operational excellence, and the delivery of exceptional service to its customers.
Training matters—to you and your employees. What will you invest in employee training in 2025?
