California Attorney General Xavier Becerra is pursuing information on Amazon.com Inc. to see if it has adequately protected its workers amid the Covid-19 pandemic. On Monday, Becerra announced his office filed a petition in Sacramento County Superior Court requesting the court order Amazon to comply with outstanding investigative subpoenas.
“Amazon has made billions during this pandemic relying on the labor of essential workers. Their workers get the job done while putting themselves at risk,” Becerra said in a statement. “It’s critical to know if these workers are receiving the protections on the job that they are entitled to under the law. Time is of the essence. Amazon has delayed responding adequately to our investigative requests long enough. We’re seeking a court order to compel Amazon to comply fully with our investigative subpoenas.”
The subpoenas were issued on Aug. 19 and seek specific details about the extent of Amazon’s Covid-19 prevention efforts. Information sought includes data on sick leave policies and cleaning procedures as well as raw data on the number of infections and deaths at the company’s facilities in California.
