Female CEOs are earning £21,277 less than their male counterparts across the UK, a study by StandOut CV based on ONS data has revealed. The gender pay gap is even wider for legal professionals with women taking home £32k less than men in the same roles.
Other key findings from the study include:
- The average full time UK salary increased by 3.42% to £31,461 and the average UK wage (including part time workers) rose by 3.4% to £25,780

The top 5 highest paying jobs in the UK are:
- Aircraft pilots and flight engineers – £92,330
- CEOs – £85,239
- Marketing and sales directors – £80,759
- Legal professionals – £77,212
- IT directors – £69,814
- CEOs have seen an average earnings decline of 12.5% resulting in an annual loss of £12,177
- The highest paying jobs where men earn more than women are Legal professionals, finance managers and CEOs
- Only 35 of the 490 roles analysed by the ONS see women earn more than men, with counsellors topping the list with a 19% difference, equating to £5,074
- The highest earning age group is 40-49 year olds, earning an average of £35,904 – and the lowest earning age group is 18-21 year olds, earning £18,087 on average

The lowest average salaried roles in the UK are:
- Playworkers – £15,394
- Cooks – £16,964
- Launderers, dry cleaners and pressers – £17,145
- Educational support assistants – £17,212
- Hairdressers and barbers – £17,223
Worryingly, many of these low paying roles have been the hardest hit by Covid-19 and associated lockdown restrictions.
