The number of IT jobs in the US fell by 15,800 jobs in March compared to February, representing a 0.29% decline, as demand for IT workers varies across geographies and sectors, according to an analysis by the TechServe Alliance, a trade association representing the IT and engineering staffing and solutions industry.

“As expected, overall IT employment continued to slide in March as some geographic markets and industry sectors retrench after overhiring during the pandemic and in its immediate aftermath,” said Mark Roberts, CEO of TechServe Alliance.

Looking at the data on a year-over-year basis, the number of IT jobs was down 2.1% in March, or 114,800 jobs.

Overall, the US had more than 5.3 million IT jobs in March.

Roberts noted the unemployment rate in IT rose to 2.7% in this quarter from 2.1% in the fourth quarter of last year; however, he said it remains well below the level deemed full employment.

“As I have noted previously, there is no single narrative that accurately describes the current market,” Roberts said. “While some sectors have engaged in layoffs that include tech workers, demand for many skill sets remains strong with IT professionals being redeployed to other industries.”

Separately, the TechServe Alliance reported engineering employment rose by 3.06% year over year in March, reflecting an increase of 82,500 engineering workers.
