This week is the fifth annual National Locum Tenens Week, which recognizes the contribution of locum tenens, or temporary doctors, in the US.

“[The National Association of Locum Tenens Organizations] salutes the many locum tenens providers who make a positive impact on the world every day,” said NALTO president Matt Young. “They fill gaps in coverage at facilities, from small rural clinics to large urban hospitals; provide compassionate care; and save lives. And for the last 18 months, they have selflessly stepped up to serve on the front lines of the Covid crisis wherever they are needed most.”

Locum tenens doctors are playing a vital role during the Covid pandemic, according to NALTO, with more than 85% of US healthcare facilities using temporary providers to maintain services. There are currently more than 50,000 physicians practicing locum tenens nationwide, equating to approximately 6% of the overall doctor workforce.

“In our present circumstances, the heroic efforts of our locum tenens clinicians are amplified. We are honored to express heartfelt appreciation for their dedication to the patients and facilities they serve,” Young said.

National Locum Tenens Week occurs annually in the second week of August.
