ASA Staffing Index Monthly Report, July 2020
Staffing employment for the week of July 6–12 grew 2.2% from the prior week, increasing to a rounded value of 70 and offsetting last week’s holiday decline, according to the ASA Staffing Index. Survey respondents cited the lingering effects of the Independence Day holiday as well as continued pressures from the pandemic as factors that inhibited further growth. While staffing jobs were down 25.3% year-to-year, this week marks the highest index value since the end of March.
The ASA Staffing Index four-week moving average rose to a rounded value of 69. Temporary and contract staffing employment for the period ending July 12 was 25.9% lower than the comparative weeks in 2019.
This week, containing the 12th day of the month, will be used in the July monthly employment situation report scheduled to be issued by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on Aug. 1.
The ASA Staffing Index is reported nine days after each workweek, making it a near real-time measure of staffing employment trends. ASA research shows that staffing employment has historically been a coincident economic indicator.
