A Virginia bill aimed at regulating the use of artificial intelligence by employers was vetoed March 24 by Gov. Glenn Youngkin.
ASA engaged on the bill through direct outreach with Younkin’s office via its lobbyists at Squire Patton Boggs, as well as through its involvement with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s AI working group. Of particular concern to staffing employers, the bill required burdensome notices for all applicants and employees prior to using artificial intelligence tools, as well as impractical individualized notices to job applicants regarding every determination made by AI tools.
Although Virginia Democrats in the state legislature do not have the votes to override the veto, it is widely expected that this bill will be reintroduced
