It’s been about a week since SHRM 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada, and all attendees are still processing all the fantastic things they learned at the conference!

The HR Daily Advisor team listened to industry experts, grew our networks, and collected best practices to share with our audience. We’ll review the conference as a whole, what we learned, and key takeaways for HR professionals.

Major Takeaways

Key themes from the conference spanned every aspect of the industry: L&D, recruiting, benefits and compensation, technology, DEI, leadership, and more.

Former President Bill Clinton spoke during the opening keynote about the role of government in human resources and how policy often goes hand in hand with HR progress. He referenced how FMLA, only passed in 1993, has grown to be an integral part of HR best practices. As Clinton reflected on current tumultuous times, he concluded that, ““It would help the economy to be pro work and pro family. We have got to have policies that are not either or.”

When addressing the future of work, Clinton spoke to the aftereffects of COVID-19 and the ongoing labor shortage. There are countless ways to address recruiting concerns, but they boil down to reaching your people. “If you take care of the people that work for you, the communities they’re apart of, as well as your suppliers, you’ll do better overall,” he explained.

Immigration, for example, brings more people to the workforce. DEI outreach helps recruiters tap a broader talent pool. And, when it comes to retention, training opportunities are essential. “We need constant training because the nature of work is constantly changing,” Clinton said. HR experts have seen first hand just how much jobseekers value learning and development opportunities.

Day 1 & 2

During the first two days of SHRM 23, we adjusted to the dry Las Vegas air and the hustle and bustle of the convention center. Key takeaways from these sessions include best practices for building a LGBTQ+ friendly workplace, how to make your company a great place to work, and how leaders can prepare for the future of work.

Day 3

On the last full day of SHRM 23, the pace didn’t slow at all. The convention center was crowded with people eager to continue learning and networking. Key takeaways from these sessions include how jobseekers can best market themselves, how to future-proof your business, and steps to mitigate bias in AI.
